October 1st, 2023 Update:

The GLOR's Sugar Beet transfer operations are just starting. Two trains, SB-1 and SB-10 will be operating, with the majority of operations being SB-10 on the thumb subdivision. SB-1 will also be operating on the Vassar subdivision. Cars for the beet operation will be leased stone cars from the ICN.

In locomotive news: 393, 394, 395 and 396 have all been released from the Lima shops following rebuilding. They are now classified as GP35M-3's.

The following units are now in the shop for rebuilding in Lima. SD20's #75 and #76 and GP15-1's #65 and #66. These units have gone out of service over the last few months and have been been sitting at the Lima Shops awaiting rebuilding. All 4 units will exit the shops with an M-3 designation (SD20M-3 or GP15M-3).

All work on the car shops is now complete and the car shops received their first cars for refurbishment / repair on September 28th. The car shops are being officials run by a Great Lakes and Ohio River Car Repair (GLORCR), a division of the Great Lakes and Ohio River. Currently the car shops have contacts signed for 300 cars to be sent to the property by the end of the year, making good use of the expanded Delta Yard.

The Clare - Baldwin line rebuilding is coming along better than expected. Depending on the weather, the plan is still to open the line in March 2024, but this weather dependent.

The plan for the Buckeye Yard Property is coming together. The GLOR is rebuilding a 9 track yard on the east side of the property, nearest the CSX IM yard. The remainder of the property will be sold by NS to Xebec, an industrial real estate company who plans to build a logistics facility on the property. The logistics facility will be served by NS. the new Buckeye Yard will have connections to both CSX and NS, and will serve as the base location for all GLOR trains on the Columbus Division, using trackage rights to access the subdivisions.

There have been some rumblings about another new customer in the TC area, and some permit applications have been filed for construction work in TC, but no firm details have been released regarding the project. In TC both propane distributors are now receiving cars for the winter season, as TC-1 serviced both within the last week.

The Kanawha Subdivision has been running steady. Most of the traffic is from the coal mines and runs with NS runthrough power assisted by the GLOR's SD60's. The GLOR is still running two local trains, one from Belle and one from Nitro, almost daily. The third local, from Columbus, is running very much as needed

There is still no word on an opening date for the Purina plant in Batavia, and work on the connection from the Peavine Subdivision to the plant has not started yet.

The GLOR's bridge over the Manistee River is in needed of, and is in the planning stages of getting rebuilt. The planning took a major step forward when the State of Michigan and GLOR received a $20 million grant to help fund the project. The grant is a major portion of the estimated $34 milltion the project will cost. MDOT will be funding the majority of the rest of the project, while a portion will be funding by the GLOR. The current project start date is estimated in 2025 and the completion date is estimated to be 2027. The project completion is already 5 years behind the original scheduled date. The project will result in some shipment delays, as the project plans do allow for multiple up to 7 day railroad outage periods during the course of construction. The current plan is to build the bridge alongside the existing bridge then cut over the trackage when the bridge is finished.

The remainder of the railroad remains steady. Grain traffic is beginning to pick up on the line as well, with regular grain shipments happening across the system, and many more expected in the coming months.

November 1st, 2023 Update:

Sugar Beet Movements are ahead of scheduled pace. Train SB-10 is running daily and will likely exceed the total expected car count for the season, as the crop is expected to exceed the expectations of Michigan Sugar this year, even though the season's weather did not start out great. SB-1 is not running daily, as it is in an area less used for beet growing this year.

The Defiance Subdivision is about to get another new customer. Tessenderlo Kerley, a fertilizer manufacting company is building a new facility in Defiance, Oh alongside the subdivision, which will get rail service.

Action on the Lilly Chaple Subdivision has picked up as well, as the Sunoco Logistics facility has begun using rail again as well.

In locomotive news, the GLOR is in the process of rebuilding the GP15-1's and the SD-20's. Those units will hopefully be released from the shops in December, 2023. The next units scheduled to go into the shops for rebuilding will be remainder of the GLOR's unrebuilt GP40's, although the exact units is yet to be determined.

Also, the GLOR, W&LE and BNSF have reached an agreement to provide ADM Flour Mill to be built near Gastonville, Pa. Wheat will be shipped from BNSF to the GLOR (via the IHB at Blue Island) to the WLE in Lima who will deliver it to the facility. The new ADM mill capacity will be 20,000 cwts and will serve the western Pa region. The mill is expected to recevie 4 unit trains per month of wheat. It is estimated that 80% of the outbound product will be going by truck, meaning roughly 1-2 cars per day of outbound flour will be shipped from this facility via rail. Due to facility capacity constraints, the facility will only be able to handle 64 car unit trains of inbound wheat. The facility is expected to open in fall 2025.

In other news, the GLOR may have a new customer in Delta, Oh as well. A new baking company is planning a facility on the GLOR's tracks on the DT&I subdivision. The facility will receive inbound flour and inbound dried fruit, as well as corn syrup and sugar. At this time it is not beleived that the company will ship any outbound products via rail.

January 1st, 2024 Update:

The GLOR's engine rebuilding program is still ongoing. The GP15M-3's #65 and #66 and the SD20M-3's #75 and #76 have both been released from the Lima Shops. Currently GP40's #402, 403, 408 and 409 are in the shop for rebuilding. Like the other rebuilt units they will exit the shop as M-3 units (GP40M-3's). In addition Larry's Truck and Electric has several units they have sent to Lima to be repaired / rebuilt as their stock of units is slighly larger than they would like on their property.

The car shops in Delta have been steady, and the rebuilt yard in Delta is full of cars for either storage or in place for rebuilding.

The sugar beet operations have been outstanding this year. GLOR has transported 600 carloads of sugar beets this fall. The majority came from the loading site in Deckerville and ran on SB-10. The shuttle trains were running 30 cars in length and 17 SB-10's ran this fall3 SB-1's also ran on the Vassar Subdivision.

ICN is looking to sell the ex-GMO hopppers, so they may end up back in the hands of the original non-original owners so to speak.

Sand operations from Yuma were steady in 2023. Yuma produced 781 carloads of sand, an average of 26 carload per week.

The second sand operation thought to open near Yuma did not open in 2023, but may be opening in 2024.

Sargent Sand's transload in Ludington also did not open as expected last year, but will be opening in the Spring of 2024.

Purina in Batavia still has not set an opening date, and as of now, the trackage from the Peavine Subdivision into the plant has yet to be constructed.

The Bladwin-Clare line is progressing nicely and is scheduled to open in March 2024, although the weather has been nice enough that they may be able to get the line opened slightly earlier. Several customers have also had spurs completed to the line and will be ready to open. The Clare transload will also be ready to open in the Spring of 2024.

The TAWRE facility in Thompsonville picked up significantly when the second unit trains of trash were allowed to be brought in. Currently operations on the Cadillac to Thompsonville branch consist of Monday - CT Local and inbound unit trash, Tuesday outbound unit trash, Wednesday CT Local, Thursday Inbound Trash Unit, Friday Outbound Trash Unit and CT Local.

The shortline interchange partners are still holding steady.

Grand Rapids Southeastern (interchange split between GLOR in Grand Rapids and CSX via trackage rights): 5100 carloads including 29 unit trains.

Alma and Mid-Michigan: 2220 carloads, including 13 unit trains. Traffic was split between going south to Toledo via the GLOR or east to interchange with LSRC and CSX in Saginaw.

Mid-Michigan: 134 carloads of actual carload traffic were interchanged, however many more cars were moved into either SIT, short term, or long term storage on the Mid-Michigan. It was not uncommon to see multiple trains per week running on the Middleton Branch not including the grain traffic.

Charlevoix, Pellston and Petoskey: 4259 carloads of interchange traffic from the CP&P. Traffic is such on this interchange that GLOR is going to expand the "yard" at Formanns used for interchange. There will be an additional track added to accomidate the increased traffic levels on the interchange and make it easier for the railroads to interchange cars. It is not uncommon for both railroads to have to make difficult switching moves to accomodate the available space on the line. The additional track should make the interchange process easier.

Imlay City Northern: Exact numbers of are not available for this interchange, as some of it is shuttle service to and from the ICN serviced elevator in Pigeon.

GLOR continues to pride itself on being able to provide the best service to all of their customers. At times this can be a challenge as it does require working with other railroads, some of whom aren't always timely on providing their interchanges to the GLOR.

The reopening of the line from Clare to Baldwin will hopefully open some additional opportunities for the railroad in northern Michigan. Several customers, including those not located along the railroad, have expressed interest in the transloading sites, and one addition major project may also be developed as a result of the line reopening (outside of the Potash traffic).

I try. When the paper railroads give me the information to include, it makes it easy.

January 1st, 2024 Update #2:

Some other highlights and goings on from the GLOR include the following.

Traffic on the Defiance Subdivision has been steadily increasing. The biggest customer on the line has been the Holcim plant in Paulding, Oh. It is not uncommon for the plant to be sending 15-20 cars of cement outbound. These cars are split between heading east to the Liberty Center interchange and on to Dundee, or west to Fort Wayne and the NS interchange. A few carloads have event been heading up the western division to the IHB in Blue Island.

Johnston Boiler has been sending about 2 carloads per month outbound from the spur into Verplank. The company would like to have their spur reconnected, but at this time MDOT seems unwilling to work to have that connection reestablished. Verplank will also be getting service again for a train to barge transload for some Army Corps of Engineers projects on Lake Michigan. There were 76 stone cars transloaded last year, and 16 cars with larger boulders as well.

From a locomotive standpoint, the GLOR is purchasing 3 more units. the LSRC has sold 4 of their GP40M-2's. One of these units was sold to the Mackinaw and Bay City, while the GLOR picked up the other three units. The GLOR's units are

1162 will be renumbered to 413
1171 will be renumbered to 414
1174 will be renumbered to 415

Additionally, the GLOR's leasing division, GLOX is purchasing several units from Montana Rail Link as MRL winds down their operations.

SD45R 346 - will be renumbered GLOX 4305
SD45R 351 - will be renumbered GLOX 4306
SD45R 382 - will be renumbered GLOX 4307

Also, the following units will also be purchased from dealers.

SOO 6617 (SD40-2) will be renumbered GLOX 4030
UPY 636 (GP15-1) will be renumbered GLOX 67
UP 5067 (SD50) from NRE will be renumbered GLOX 5001
UP 5071 (SD50) from NRE will be renumbered GLOX 5002
Hudson Bay Railway 5002 (SD50) from NRE will be renumbered GLOX 5003
Hudson Bay Railway 5003 (SD50) from NRE will be renumbered GLOX 5004

GLOX has also purchased the following units from UP prior to a scheduled auction later this year.
UP 2252 will be renumbered GLOX 6013
UP 2295 will be renumbered GLOX 6014
UP 2325 will be renumbered GLOX 6015
UP 2346 will be renumbered GLOX 6016
UP 2421 will be renumbered GLOX 6017
UP 2259 will be renumbered GLOX 6018
UP 2458 will be renumbered GLOX 6019

Other units may be added to the lease fleet in the coming months as well. Several companies are preparing to or have scheduled auctions to dispose of excess inventory. If this price is right GLOX may add the units to their fleet.

In other news, Louis Dreyfus company will be adding a soybean processing facility in Upper Sandusky, Oh which is expected to open in 2026. The facility will be located along the GLOR's Western Subdivision.

February, 1st, 2024 update.

The weather has been very helpful to the construction of the Baldwin-Clare line. This line is scheduled to open on February 5th. The line will be operated by trains CB (Clare to Baldwin) and BC (Baldwin to Clare). A single crew will operate the line as of this time, with the crew being stationed in Baldwin.

A portion of the construction of the new line as the expansion of the Clare Yard running north of M115. This north (west) end of this line will connect to the new transload yard which is located on the south side of the tracks north of Central Concrete Products. The connection to the Clare Baldwin line will run across the South Branch Tobacco River, through the eastern edge of the CCP property, crossing M-115 and heading west to Baldwin.

Currently the following customers have contracts for rail service from the line.

Gateway Wood Products / Northern Mat (Clare) - Inbound Wood Products
JR Aggregates (Hersey) - Outbound Stone, Outbound Sand
Hersey Aggregates (Hersey) - Outbound stone, Outbound Sand
Michigan Potash and Salt Company (Evart) - Outbound Potash, Outbound Salt
Ventra Evart (Evart) Inbound Plastic Pellets
General Mill / Yoplait (Reed City) - Inbound fruit, Inbound Glass Containers, Outbound Yogurt - glass containers

In addition, Cheboygan Sweetener will begin transloading sweeteners in Clare. In addition, two other plastics companies are also looking at transloading from the new Clare transload.

The opening of the line will also allow a shortened trip for flour from King Milling's newly expanded Lowell Mill to Sare Lee in Traverse City. Currently this traffic has been handled by going east to Durand then north. Now it will be handled going north to Bladwin, east to Clare, the north to TC. The timing of trains will be such that this should shave approximately 1 day off the schedule transit time.

The opening if this line has also caused some Manistee and Ludington traffic to be rerouted east to Clare, where it will run south to connected with CN in Durand. Currently all traffic has to run south.

February 5th, 2024 Update:

The GLOR has agreed to purchase two additional locomotives.

RS2u's 468 and 469 are being purchased from the Mackinaw and Bay City Railroad. These units were originally D&M engines before being sold to the Lake State and then M&BC. These units will be shipped to the Lima Shops where they will be put on display in the museum portion of the property and cosmetically restored, 468 will be repainted into its maroon and white paint scheme while 469 will be repainted into the black and gold with the number on the side scheme. The units will be kept in operational condition as leasable units and will officially be listed on the GLOX roster.

Monday February 5th was the first day of operation for the rebuilt Clare to Baldwin portion of the railroad. This line had been removed in the late 1980's between Midland and Baldwin.

Train BC and its return consisted of GLOR units 393 and 390, plus 4 carloads of inbound glass containers (for Yoplait), 3 refer carloads of inbound fruit (for Yoplait) which will also be used for outbound Yogurt loads, 4 carloads of plastic pellets( for Ventra Evart), 3 carloads of wood (for Gateway Wood Products). In addition there are 4 carloads of flour from King Milling to Sara Lee in TC, 6 tank cars from Occidental Chemical in Ludington, and 2 carloads of sweetener for the transload in Clare. Currently there are no carloads in Clare Yard awaiting transport back to Baldwin, so the only cars heading back WB will be those needing to be switched going WB.

The opening of the line is resulting in another operational change. Currently GLOR is getting 1 load of trash that comes in from Massachusetts and a second that somes in from Illinois. The current routing of the Illinois trash is NS to Toledo, to GLOR, to the TAWRE facility. NS will now be handing this traffic off to GLOR in Elkhart. The GLOR will run the Illinois trash trains from Elkhart to Baldwin, to Clare to Thompsonville.

The next major project for the GLOR's track crews is the rebuilding of their portion of Buckeye Yard. Now that crews have finished the Clare - Baldwin line, they will focus their attention on this project. This project is not expected to take a significant length of time, and GLOR is hoping to have the yard open in the fall. Whern the yard opens, all Columbus based activity will take place from this yard using trackage rights over CSX and NS as needed to delivery interchange traffic and access GLOR trackage.

The next project currently on the railroads list is the rebuilding of the line from Sturgis to Coldwater to reconnect the White Pigeon and INER Subdivisions. Currently there are no customers on that portion of the line, however reconnecting the line will give customers on the line additional options, and may allow a few customers additional access points to the rail network, hopefully opening up competitiveness and carloads for the GLOR. The line does remain intact, although it has not seen traffic in almost 20 years.

February 12th Update:

The GLOR has purchased a pair of lines from Patriot Rail, both of which are running under the Elkhart and Western name.

The first is Elkhart and Western's Elkhart Branch, which runs from Elkhart, In to Mishawaka, In

The second is the Argos Branch from Plymouth, In to Argos, In

In addition to the purchase of these lines, the GLOR has also purchased the following locomotives which have been providing service to these lines, and will continue to do so in the near term.

PREX 911 (GP9) Will be renumbered GLOX 91
PREX 912 (GP9) Will be renumbered GLOX 92
PREX 1600 (GP16) will be renumbered GLOX 160
PREX 1606 (GP16) will be renumbered GLOX 161
PREX 1608 (GP16) will be renumbered GLOX 162

The Elkhart Branch will interchange with the Kalamazoo Subdivision and NS in Elkhart.

The Argos Branch will interchange with the Ft. Wayne Subdivision in Plymouth, NS in Argos and the Rochester and Erie in Argos.

Additionally, the GLOR has announced their 2024 football specials will return for Michigan home football games, and in an agreement with Canadian National and Amtrak, GLOR will run a football special to Michigan State this year as well. In addition, GLOR will be running football specials to Columbus for the Michigan vs OSU game.

Additional details will be provided later, but currently scheduled football specials will include:

University of Michigan

September 7th vs Texas
September 21st vs USC
October 26th vs Michigan State

Michigan State University

September 28th vs Ohio State

Ohio State University
Novemebr 30th vs Michigan

There may be 1 additional football special added as well for a small college game, depending on demand

November 16th, 2024

Alma College at Adrian College

February 17th, 2024 Updates:

Another former railroad customer property may again get rail service.

The former Sturgis Iron and Metal and OnmiSource plant in Sturigs may again be getting rail service. A new company, Sturgis Scrap and Metal, has purchased the property and will begin operations in April 2024. One of their first contacts is to scrap about 100 railroad cars which have been purchased from GATX and are due for removal from operations. Additional purchases are also being looked at for the company as well.

In other news, another former railroad customer may be returning to the rails.
GLOR's car repair business is also going to be building some new rail cars. Specifically 24 new 86 foot boxcars, which will be transfered to the Logan Subdivision and will resume the Anchor Hocking Shuttle Service which was discontinued when the previously used boxcars were deemed too old and in poor condition.

GLOR will be stationing a single locomotive in Lancaster, Oh (likely a GP38-2) to provide switching service for Anchor Hocking. The 24 cars will be split into 4 6 car cuts. 6 cars will be in the loading dock, 6 on the adjacent plant siding, 6 will be unloaded at a time at the warehouse. The 4th cut will be kept in stoage as backups.

Additionally, the GLOR will be purchasing, and assigning to GLOX, the ICN's collection of ex-GMO open hoppers. These cars have been on lease during the previous two sugar beet seasons from the ICN and became expendable when the ICN purchased a significant number of CN open hoppers.

GLOR's car repair shops may also be building some new covered hoppers for the GLOX lease fleet, specifically for sand service.

In addition, the GLOR is reactivating a long closed, then opened, then closed yard, sort of.

Due to upcoming changes on one of the GLOR's partner railroads, GLOR is in need of additional SIT space. As a result, Ferry Yard in Ann Arbor, which still has its yard tracks in place, is going to be reactivated as a storage yard.

GLOR's Locomotive shops have a few more GP40's left to rebuild into GP40M-3's. The next project on the horizon for the locomotive shops will be a drastic change from the current focus of ugrading engines, electronics and traction motors.

GLOR's locomotive shops are going to begin transitioning several locomotives from standard diesel electric to hybrid locomotives.

Currently 1 locomotive is in the shop being prepared for this process, GLOX SD50 #5001.

March 1st, 2024 Update: More GLOR Expansion.

After several years of wondering about the future of the line, and and much anticipation about the LSRC getting the line, there was a surprise when CSX sold the Port Huron Subdivision to GLOR. This line will be the Port Huron Subdivision of the Saginaw Bay Division. This agreement included Canadian National granting GLOR trackage rights from Durand to Port Huron. These trackage rights will allo GLOR interhange access with LSRC via the Longway Connector.

The current customers on the line are:

DCP Midstream Partners
Marysville Ethanol
CSX/GLOR Transload - Davis Rd
Dynamic Polymer Soultions - at Davis Rd Transload
Engineered Plastic Components - at Davis Rd Transload
Plains LPG Services
Cargil Salt Plant
DTE - St Clair and Belle River Plants - connection maintained for occassional high-wide loads into facility. No longer receiving coal.

GLOR plans to station 4 locomotives on the line. Two will in primary use, while two additional units will be in secondary use on the line.

GLOR will operate 3 trains related to this purchase.

PH-1 - Port Huron to Marysville Local - Services all customers on the Port Huron Subdivision and interchange with CN in Port Huron.
DPH - Durand to Port Huron - Run through. Will handle interchange with Lake State as needed. Will run M-W-F
PHD - Port Huron to Durand - Run through. Will handle interchange with Lake State as needed. Will Run T-Th-Sa

In addition, GLOR has purchased the former PH&D Roundhouse location with plans to create a Port Huron Railroad Museum on the property. GLOR is looking at trying to purchase previous PH&D, Pere Marquette, Chessie System, C&O, and GTW equipment for the museum.

March 1st 2024 Update #2:

There has been a crazy report that the another former line may see reactivation in the future.

Avoca, Mi, which lies at the end of the DTE Energy owned line from Brown City, which connects with the Vassar Subdivision, is in the running for a massive new industrial projected. DTE energy is partnering with Michigan Biofuels for a Biodiesel production facility. One of the proposed locations ia Avoca, due to its location on the DTE owned trackage and its proximity to DTE's Greenwood Energy Center.

DTE is considering expanding its Greenwood Energy Center with another unit designed to produce electricity using biodiesel.

The proposed biodiesel plant, if it were to be built would use a variety of different feedstocks to produce biodiesel which would then be transported to the Greenwood Energy Center for use in producing energy.

If the project were to actually be built, estimations, based on current planning, would be be the plant would produce 100 million gallons of biodiesel per year, making it the third largest biodiesel plant in the United States.

A plant this size would require a lot of feedstock. It is estimated that the plant would need 755 million pounds of feedstock to produce the 100 million gallons of biodiesel. Depending on the feedstock used, this could be a very large volume of product inbound for the facility. The facility is initially expected to use soybean and vegitable oil as the feedstock, although other feedstock oils may also be used, including algael oil. In addition, the facility will also require inbound shipments (hopefully by rail) methanol, and sodium hydroxide. Early projections would indicate that if the plant were built at the capacity indicated, the plant would require 755 million pounds of inbound oil (100 million gallons) 900,000 pounds of sodium hydroxide, and 15,000,000 gallons of methanol, produce 100 million gallons of crude biodiesel, as well as 105,000,000 pounds of glycerol.

This would come out to roughly 3100 carloads of inbound oil, 3100 outbound loads of biodiesel, 5 carloads of inbound sodium hydroxide, 470 carloads of inbound methanol, and 314 carloads of glycerine outbound.

The above projections would be if everything arrived and departed by rail.

Due to the volume of traffic both inbound and outbound from the facility, rail would be a key aspect of the project. The current plans indicate DTE would use rail to transport the cars of biodiesel from the plant to the Greenwood Energy Center, even though this would only be a approximately a 3 mile trip. DTE would contract with GLOR to service all industries on the Avoca Branch. DTE, along with GLOR, the State of Michigan, the United States Department of Transportation and the United States Department of Energy will all provide funding to the construction of the plant, as well as upgrading infrastructure to reach the plant. Rail access to the plant would be done by rebuilding roughly 20 miles of the DTE owned rail line from Brown City to Avoca.

DTE initially looked at rebuilding the line from Port Huron to Avoca, a shorter distance of roughly 13 miles, however very strong opposition to that idea was voiced by many in Port Huron and the surrounding community. Had this route been selected, it is likely that CN would have received the contract to operate the line.

Using the current existing line, GLOR will become the contracted service provider for the line, while DTE Energy would remain the lines owner.

Once word of the project leaked out, several other potential rail customers have also looked at gaining rail service. Michigan Sugar has looked at possibly adding a sugar beet loading facility in Yale, as several farms will be growing sugar beets in the vacinity in future years. Additionally, Redall Industries in Yale, Ameriscapes landscape Supply, and Yale Feed and Grain also in Yale have expressed potential interest in using rail if it were available.

One interesting aspect of this project would be the locomotive usage required for the project. DTE, as the owner of the line has requested that any locomotives operating on the line be as low emission locomotives as possible, possibly contracting to have battery operated locomotives provide service on the DTE Energy owned line.

One note, which was overlooked in previous reporting about the GLOR's operations.

In 2019, due to increased demand for space in and around White Pigeon, the GLOR added a 4000 foot passing siding between W. Chicago Rd and Dickinson Rd. This was added to accomidate increased space requirements and acts as the "yard" for switching cars around in WP. The setouts by the Elkhart - Kalamazoo trains for White Pigeon take place on the connection track. There is talk of installing a connection track for SB trains to directly enter the WP subdivision, but that project is still on the drawing board. Current traffic levels on the WP Sub don't require the additional access.

The following customers are present on the Lake Michigan Division. The following trains provide service to these customers on a carload basis. Unit Trains operate to some of these facilities but under a unit train symbol.
